This week, I am very excited to share this conversation with Ana Paula Fuentes, an expert in Mexican textiles and a cultural guide based in Oaxaca.

As Oaxaca is one of the most desired places to source from and visit these days, I think our discussion on the state of the industry there is incredibly relevant. She shares some important insights on how to responsibly source from and design with indigenous artisans.

Just 15 years ago, it was difficult to get buyers interested in artisan sourcing. Now, there is a saturation of handmade products and intense competition. Those forces are changing the places we visit as well as the way of life for indigenous communities who are trying to navigate the new pressures that come from increased market demand.

I talked to Ana about the changes gripping the Oaxacan artisan sector, some of the unseen challenges artisans are facing, and tips for buyers on how to source and design more respectfully, knowing some of the issues artisans are facing today. I hope you enjoy!
